If you’ll forgive the pun, we think the under-construction Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA, will be a peach of a sports and entertainment venue.
Aside from hosting home games for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and Major League Soccer’s Atlanta United, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be the site of the national college football championship in 2018, the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NCAA Men’s Final Four in 2020. The $1.5 billion stadium is scheduled to open in June 2017.
The 1.9 million-square-foot stadium will have:
One of the most impressive features of Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be its retractable roof, which workers will be able to open in 10 minutes.
“Made of a high-tech, lightweight plastic polymer known for its strength and corrosion resistance, the iconic roof consists of eight translucent ‘camera-lens’ style petals,” the stadium’s website says. “When these petals slide open, the oval-shaped roof opening spans the length of the field past each end zone and across the field over new sideline patio seating.”
Developers of the stadium say it’s designed to “reimagine” the fan experience.
“We focused from the beginning on building a unique fan experience at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a goal of helping those who visit to leave the stadium with great memories shared with family and friends, not aggravation and frustration about their experience,” says Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United.
