Native plants can add color, variety, and shape to any garden. They tend to adapt best to environmental conditions, require less water than non-native plants, and attract beneficial pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Here are a few types of native plants that will thrive in your Oklahoma City garden.
Native Shrubs
Sumac
This flowering shrub can bring a burst of red to your garden when it blooms. The large flower clusters brighten up during the fall and last through the winter. They can grow up to 20 feet tall and 15 feet in width, so they make a great addition to the landscape.
Clove Currant
This shrub features small clusters of yellow flowers on blue-green leaves. They bloom in the spring and can grow to become fairly large and will need some pruning to rejuvenate when the leaves grow unkempt.
Native Grasses
Switchgrass
This grass can be a great filler for your garden because it adds texture and color to the garden. The blue-green grass also gives way to pink flowers in the summer.
Little Bluestem
Common on many prairies, little bluestem turns into red or gold in the fall, adding color to the fine texture of the grass. It does well under a full sun and requires very little maintenance.
Prairie Dropseed
Often considered a “showy” grass for gardens, prairie dropseed has fine textured, emerald green leaves that can make any garden pop.
Perennials
Coreopsis
These yellow flowers come in a variety of sizes and textures. They can add a bright, cheerful color to your garden.
Salvia
With a bright burst of color, these flowers love sun and moist soil. With square stems and bright pink flowers, they are a great addition of color to your garden.
Catmint
These small blue flowers often bloom all summer long on the green leaves. These flowers attract hummingbirds to your garden.
Phlox
These flowers can be creeping or tall. They come with blue, red or white flowers. Different varieties can flower in spring, summer or fall. Choose the type you like best that will add to your garden.
