Follow the One-Third Mowing Rule

When you mow your lawn each week, you should mow to the appropriate height for each grass type you have. (See our Best Grass Types for Oklahoma City Lawns for mowing heights and more.)

You also need to make sure you’re following the one-third mowing rule, which will help keep your lawn healthy. This rule states that you should never remove more than one-third of the grass blade.

What does this mean? Let’s say you have a grass type that should be mowed to a height of 2 inches. You should wait until the grass is 3 inches tall, and then mow off just the top inch (set your lawn mower to 2 inches). If you cut off too much, you risk damaging the grass blades and giving your lawn a burnt-out look.

Apply Fertilizer When Needed

Apply fertilizer that has the nutrients your lawn needs the most, so your lawn will look green and healthy. Apply fertilizer depending on your grass type and its needs.

Fertilizer has different amounts of a variety of nutrients to suit the needs of your lawn, so a soil test can help you know which one is best for you. Consult a lawn treatment pro near you if you have questions about how to properly fertilize your lawn.

Get Rid of Weeds, Insects, and Lawn Diseases

Weeds, insects, and lawn diseases can wreak havoc on your lawn at any time of year, but there are certain ones that are especially active during the summer.

  • Weeds like dandelions can invade and take over the lawn.
  • Brown circles in your lawn may be a sign of brown patch disease, while other signs of brown, dead grass may point to insect infestation.

Pay attention and deal with these signs of weeds or lawn diseases as soon as you notice them. Contact a local lawn care pro if you are a little out of your league with the pest control demands of your lawn this summer.

Water Your Lawn

Good root growth relies on you watering deeply. Your lawn’s water needs are determined by your grass type. However, it’s recommended to apply more water every other day or every two days, as opposed to a small amount every single day, for the necessary weekly amount your lawn requires.

You can ensure good watering habits by having a water-efficient irrigation system installed. This will ensure you water only when needed—and not overwater or waste water in other ways (like overspray or misting).
