Spring Lawn Care Tips for Jackson, MS

As winter fades away, you want to start spending more time outdoors in Jackson. Sometimes, the easiest way to do this is to get out in your own backyard. But what if you’ve spent the past few months ignoring your lawn? It’s brown and scraggly. It does not look like something you want to spend much time staring at or hanging out on. What can you do?

Spring is the perfect time to rejuvenate your yard. Similar to “spring cleaning” for the inside of your house, spring can bring a fresh start to the outside too. Your plants may bloom, your lawn may start to come back. None of this will happen without a little effort on your part, though. Here are some spring lawn care tips for Jackson, MS.

Clean up

You’ll want to clean up your yard. Pick up any debris, like leaves, branches, twigs and more, that may have fallen onto your lawn this winter. By doing so, you’ll get it ready to get back to growing this spring. Cleaning up the lawn will allow water, sun, fertilizer and air to get to the grass or seeds to help them grow.

Fertilize

You should only fertilize during the growing season, so starting in the spring, you should develop and implement a fertilization plan for the next few months. Depending on the type of grass you have and the fertilizer you choose, you’ll need to figure out how much and how often you should fertilize.

Water

In the spring, you may need to do an irrigation system check-up. Reset your irrigation schedule if you had it running (or completely off) this winter. Make sure all sprinkler heads work, there aren’t any leaks in the pipes or nozzles and any soil moisture sensors or rain gauges are operating.

Kill Weeds

April showers bring May flowers–and some of those “flowers” may be unwanted weeds growing in your lawn. If that’s the case, then you’ll need to use an herbicide to get rid of those weeds. Pre-emergent herbicides work to kill seeds before they germinate, while post-emergent herbicides kill the weeds that have popped up. Talk to your local garden center about what herbicide might be best for you.
