In 2014, Lenexa, KS, joined a fairly exclusive club. The Kansas City, MO, suburb was one of 14 U.S. cities that year to hit the 50,000-resident mark. Today, Lenexa and more than 750 other cities are home to at least 50,000 residents.
For decades, Lenexa has witnessed significant growth, particularly in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s. From 1950 to 2015, Lenexa saw its population catapult by an astonishing 6,437 percent, U.S. Census Bureau data shows.
The Census Bureau says Lenexa’s population stood at 52,490 in July 2015, up 2.9 percent from July 2014. That population uptick made Lenexa the fastest-growing Kansas City suburb (with at least 50,000 residents) from 2014 to 2015, as well as the fastest-growing midsize to large city in all of Kansas.
And it looks like Lenexa’s growth will continue. In 2015, the city issued more building permits for single-family homes -- 241 -- than it had since 2006. Projections indicate Lenexa’s population will reach 53,703 in 2020.
“We strategically plan our growth, and our commitment to well-planned residential subdivisions, quality schools, safe neighborhoods and excellent parks helps attract new residents to Lenexa,” Mayor Michael Boehm said in 2014. “We are delighted to welcome new families to our community, and have no doubt they will find Lenexa a great place to live, work and play.”
