Beaverton gets its name from the land's original settlers, the Atfalati tribe of Native Americans. They called it "Chakeipi," which means "place of the beaver." After pioneers moved into Oregon in the 1800s, a businessman named Lawrence Hall bought the land and built a grist mill. Thus began the development of what would become Beaverton.
