If you are brand new to landscaping, or are building an entirely new landscape in your yard, the first step is to draw out a plan.

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service suggests that a landscaping plan is the best way to make sure that you’ll have enough room for your plants as well as help you decide where to put certain varieties. Even if your landscaping is already planted it may be a good idea to draw out a plan of your home and yard to help understand where everything is and how that correlates to the overall look of your home.

2. Choose Native Plants

Incorporating native plants into your landscaping is a great way to not only support the environment but also to make sure that the plants will do well in the Corpus Christi climate.

Although you may love that Japanese Maple that your relatives have up north, it probably won’t do as well in the hot and humid South Texas climate. Corpus Christi is right on the edge of two growing regions: the Hill Country and Central Coast, as well as the Rio Grande Valley.

There isn’t too much of a difference with the native plants that do well in the area and most homeowners in the Corpus Christi area should be able to pick and choose from either category.

3. Plant Trees

There is an old Chinese proverb that states, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Tree planting is a great way to invest in your property and your future self will thank you in the long lasting benefits that a tree provides.

Trees take a long time to establish and grow into something that will help add shade and beauty to your yard. If the homeowners before you didn’t plant very many trees consider do so this year to invest in your yard and look toward the future.

Trees are a great way to provide important shade to your yard and home as well as become a new home for birds and pollinators in the area.

4. Consider Xeriscaping

The Corpus Christi area receives about 32 inches of rain each year which is only slightly below the national average for rainfall. Compared to other Texas climates, this area is pretty wet with the most rainfall received during the summer and fall seasons.

With almost a year-round growing season, Corpus Christi has little chance of seeing freezing temperatures making the area a great option for xeriscaping for winter and spring seasons.

Xeriscaping is simply choosing those native plants that require little to no added irrigation in an effort to conserve on water use. Homeowners will enjoy lower water bills thanks to xeriscaping as well as the lower maintenance that these plants require.

Mulching your Corpus Christi landscaping has many benefits that make it an easy choice for homeowners. Mulching helps to conserve moisture which reduces the amount of added water that a plant requires. It also helps to regulate the soil temperature allowing plants to grow a strong root system.

Mulching also prevents weeds from growing which is a reason in itself to add it to your landscaping, especially in the year-round Corpus Christi growing season. You can use grass clippings or hay as a mulching material as well as bark dust, leaves, compost, or stones.

When to Hire a Landscaping Pro

Landscaping a yard can be an overwhelming experience for some homeowners, but it doesn’t have to be hard.

Consider making a plan of your yard and choosing to use native plants for both their environmental support as well as their xeriscaping benefits.

Plant trees throughout your property to invest in your yard, and spread mulch around the gardenscape to cut down on weed growth and provide an extra layer of benefit to plants.

All of these tips are important to consider when landscaping around your Corpus Christi home.
