This town contains many unique attractions. The Gwinnett Historic Courthouse is an impressive brick building with a tower made in 1885. Dedicated to documenting and preserving the story of Gwinnett County, this museum contains a photographic archive of the county's inhabitants. It also maintains a collection of artifacts from the region's past.
Lawrence is a city rich in history. The region was once inhabited by Creek and Cherokee peoples. The U.S. military built several forts in the area after the Creek attacked a U.S. base in Alabama during the War of 1812. The 1820s and '30s saw the systematic removal of native people from the region. The Creek ceded the land that would become the Atlanta metro area in 1821. Lawrenceville was incorporated in December of that year. The city was named after James Lawrence, the commander of a frigate in the war of 1812.
Lawrenceville was also home to its share of notable people. Oliver Hardy, of the famous comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, lived in the city during his childhood. This town was also the site of the attempted assassination of famous pornographer Larry Flynt. Flynt was the publisher of Hustler and the center of a pivotal court case that would change laws on obscenity and free speech. He was shot outside the Lawrenceville courthouse in 1978. Flynt survived but would remain disabled for life.
