Landscaping in Colorado Springs is a four-season endeavor.
If you like your yard but want to love it, follow this seasonal calendar of landscaping chores to level up your Colorado Springs yard.
Spring
- Lawn Care: Resume mowing in mid-March, provided the grass is growing and temperatures are 40 degrees or above.
- Mulch: Add fresh mulch to gardens to protect new growth.
- Planting: Plant your shrubs and perennials around mid-April, after the last frost. For annuals, wait until after Mother’s Day.
- Irrigation: First, verify that all system components are working correctly and carry out any needed repairs. After that, turn on your sprinkler systems in early to mid-June.
- Hardscaping: Spring is a great time to install patios, walkways, and stone garden walls. To make sure the last frost has passed, wait until after Mother's Day.
- Landscape Lighting: Install any landscape lighting when the ground is soft to bury the wires in the ground.
- Fencing: Temps should be 50 degrees Fahrenheit or higher to install fencing. Concrete footers need 20 days to cure, so plan accordingly.
Summer
- Lawn Care: Reduce mowing during prolonged hot, dry conditions unless you’re able to irrigate well.
- Irrigation: Summer is a good time to set up a sprinkler system for your lawn or add drip hoses in garden beds.
- Landscape Lighting: Install new lighting, except during extended periods of wet weather.
- Fencing: This is a great time to repair, paint, or stain fences.
Fall
- Lawn Care: Stop mowing when the grass stops growing, generally when temps drop below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Leaf Cleanup: Blow, rake or bag leaves. Or, if you prefer, hire a local leaf removal crew.
- Mulch: Spread fresh mulch to protect plants from winter cold.
- Planting: Plant spring bulbs now. Trees can also be planted in September. Cut perennials back.
- Irrigation: Winterize your system before early October. Blow out any remaining water in your system before temperatures hit 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Hardscaping: End installing hardscaping projects before the first frost hits.
- Landscape Lighting: Install lighting until late September or before the ground freezes.
- Fencing: Installation, repairs, and painting/staining until late September.
Winter
- Hardscaping: For patios, walkways, and outdoor kitchen areas, take this opportunity to prepare for next spring. Measure your space, select your materials, and create a budget.
- Shrub Pruning: Late winter or early spring.
