Tucson Landscaping Projects By Season

Yard work is a year-round proposition in Tucson, but the warm climate also provides year-round opportunities to enhance and improve your landscape. Here is a calendar to help guide you.

Spring

  • Lawn Care: Begin regular mowing in May.
  • Irrigation: Deeply water your lawn every three days. Water in the early morning, ideally before 6 a.m.
  • Planting: Overseed summer grasses between mid-April and May. Plant trees and shrubs.
  • Mulch: In May, spread mulch around heat-sensitive plants.
  • Xeriscaping: If you are considering a xeriscape, spring is the best time to start.
  • Fencing: Have a new fence installed while the weather is still mild.
  • Landscape Lighting: Landscaping lights can be installed any time of the year. 
  • Hardscaping: Add a new hardscaping feature to your yard, such as a patio or walkway.

Summer

  • Lawn Care: Mow regularly from May to September.
  • Irrigation: Water every three days in the cool of the day, either at dawn or dusk.
  • Fencing: Repair, paint, or stain your fence.
  • Landscape Lighting: Perform maintenance or change lightbulbs as needed.

Fall

  • Lawn Care: Lawn mowing season ends sometime in September. Fertilize cold-season grasses every 6-8 weeks.
  • Irrigation: Continue to water regularly as needed. 
  • Planting: Overseed cold-season grasses in October. Plants trees and shrubs.
  • Mulch: Add mulch to insulate plants vulnerable to chilly winter temperatures.
  • Landscape Lighting: Install new landscaping lights. 
  • Hardscaping: Add new hardscaping features such as fire pits or a swimming pool. 

Winter

  • Leaf Cleanup: Rake leaves from November to January. 
  • Irrigation: Water once a week or as needed. 
  • Pruning: Trim trees and shrubs between November and February.
  • Fencing: Install a new fence.
